The Ministry of Women and Child Development has clarified in Parliament that there is no plan to revise the honorarium of anganwadi workers and helpers engaged under the government’s nutrition-focused POSHAN scheme. These workers continue to operate on an existing pay structure, which has remained unchanged since 2018.

No Increase in Anganwadi Honorarium

In response to a question raised in the Lok Sabha, the Minister of State for Women and Child Development, Savitri Thakur, stated that there is currently no proposal under consideration to increase the honorarium of anganwadi workers or helpers. These individuals serve under the POSHAN scheme, which aims to improve nutritional outcomes for children, pregnant women and lactating mothers across India.

Anganwadi Workers Serve on a Voluntary Basis

According to the minister’s written reply, anganwadi workers are regarded as “honorary workers.” They voluntarily provide services for early childhood care, development and nutrition support within their communities. Their role is critical in implementing grassroots initiatives related to child welfare and maternal health.

Present Structure of Honorarium Payments

The honorarium payments, which serve as a form of compensation rather than a salary, were last revised on October 1, 2018. As per the current structure:

  • Anganwadi workers at regular centres receive ₹4,500 each month
  • Anganwadi workers at mini-centres receive ₹3,500 per month
  • Anganwadi helpers are paid ₹2,250 per month

In addition to the fixed honorarium, performance-based incentives are also provided. Anganwadi workers receive an incentive of ₹500, while helpers receive ₹250. These incentives are meant to reward effective service delivery under the POSHAN scheme.

Conclusion

The written statement in the Lok Sabha makes it clear that the Ministry has not proposed or initiated any action toward revising the current honorarium amounts. This clarification comes amid questions regarding the adequacy of compensation for those playing a vital role in community health and nutrition.
