A series of financial announcements has been made by the Bihar government that aim to address the remuneration of critical workers. These include school support staff such as cooks, night watchmen, and physical education instructors, as well as frontline healthcare workers.
As per news reports, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced an increase in honorarium for key school support staff in government-run institutions. Cooks under the mid-day meal scheme will now receive ₹3,300 per month, doubling from ₹1,650. Night watchmen will receive ₹10,000, and physical education and health instructors will now earn ₹16,000 monthly, both seeing a twofold increase.
In addition to the salary enhancement, the annual increment for physical education and health instructors has been raised from ₹200 to ₹400. According to the chief minister, these roles play a crucial part in the education ecosystem, and the improved remuneration is aimed at boosting their morale and recognising their contribution.
In another major step, the Bihar government has announced increased incentives for frontline health workers. Accredited Social Health Activists, commonly referred to as ASHAs, will now receive ₹3,000 per month. This is a threefold increase from the earlier ₹1,000. Mamta workers will be paid ₹600 for each delivery, compared to the previous rate of ₹300.
These workers play an essential role in implementing the National Rural Health Mission and providing healthcare services in rural and underserved areas. The enhancement in incentives is viewed as a measure to support their ongoing efforts in improving public health.
Beyond salary hikes, the state government has turned its attention to heritage and infrastructure development. The chief minister recently visited the proposed redevelopment site of Janki Mandir at Punaura Dham in Sitamarhi. With a total budget allocation of ₹882 crore, the redevelopment is scheduled to commence from August 8. The temple is considered to be the birthplace of Goddess Sita and holds immense cultural significance.
