The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has received an aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This licence is a key regulatory requirement for the airport to commence operations.

The announcement marks a major milestone for the greenfield airport project, which is being developed in five phases under a public-private partnership led by the Adani Group and Maharashtra’s CIDCO.

Capacity and Operational Plans

In its first phase, NMIA will have the capacity to handle 20 million passengers and 0.5 million metric tonnes of cargo annually. Once fully operational, the airport is expected to manage up to 90 million passengers and 3.2 million metric tonnes of cargo, becoming a significant hub in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The inauguration is expected in early October 2025, delayed from the original September 30 date due to heavy rains in the region.

Airlines and Flight Operations

Several airlines have announced plans to operate from NMIA at launch:

  • Air India Express: 20 daily flights to 15 Indian cities initially; plans to expand to 55 daily flights including international routes by mid-2026.
  • IndiGo: 18 daily flights at launch; targeting 140 flights within 18 months.
  • Akasa Air: 15 domestic flights daily at launch; scaling to 300+ domestic and 50 international flights weekly.

Infrastructure and Staff Accommodation

To support airport operations, NMIAL has secured 405 ready-to-move-in flats at Panvel from Wadhwa Group under a leave and license agreement. This housing is intended for airport staff and their families starting October 2025.

Officials have noted that roads leading to the airport may still have loose soil and muck, which could make commuting slightly difficult for visitors initially.

Conclusion

With the DGCA licence in place, NMIA is now on track to become Mumbai’s second major airport, significantly enhancing passenger and cargo capacity in the region. The facility promises to strengthen connectivity, support economic growth, and provide state-of-the-art infrastructure for both domestic and international travelers.
