Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) commenced commercial operations on Thursday, marking a significant expansion of Mumbai’s aviation capacity and a key milestone in India’s infrastructure development journey.
With this launch, Mumbai joins global cities such as London, New York, Tokyo and Shanghai that operate multiple airports to meet growing passenger demand.
The start of operations at NMIA signals the beginning of a true multi-airport system for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Designed to ease congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), NMIA is expected to improve capacity, resilience and long-term scalability for one of India’s busiest aviation hubs.
Developed and operated by Adani Airports Holdings Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Limited, NMIA is among India’s largest greenfield airport projects. The airport reflects the Adani Group’s capability to execute complex, large-scale infrastructure projects within challenging timelines, supporting national growth priorities.
The first commercial arrival, IndiGo flight 6E460 from Bengaluru, landed at 08:00 hours and was welcomed with a traditional water cannon salute. On its first day, NMIA handled 48 flights connecting nine domestic destinations and served over 4,000 passengers. Peak traffic was recorded between 05:00 and 07:00 hours, highlighting strong initial demand and operational readiness.
Chairman Gautam Adani welcomed passengers and interacted with airport staff, community representatives and first-time flyers. The launch featured a flag-hoisting ceremony led by Param Vir Chakra awardees, cultural performances showcasing Maharashtrian traditions, and participation from leading sportspersons and social influencers.
Airlines including, IndiGo, Air India Express and Akasa Air confirmed the start of scheduled departures.
