Launched with an outlay of ₹1,261 crore, the Namo Drone Didi scheme is a Central Sector scheme aimed at advancing agricultural efficiency by empowering Women Self Help Groups (SHGs) through drone technology. Covering 2023-24 to 2025-26, this initiative targets transformative technological adoption in India’s rural sectors.
The Namo Drone Didi scheme facilitates the provision of 15,000 drones to identified Women SHGs across India. A Central Financial Assistance (CFA) of 80% is provided for drone packages, capped at ₹8 lakh per SHG. Each drone package includes one standard battery and four additional battery sets for extended usage. Drone pilots and assistants undergo 15-day and 5-day training sessions, respectively, through DGCA-authorised RPTOs, ensuring readiness for aerial agriculture operations.
In the FY 2023-24, 1,094 drones were distributed by Lead Fertiliser Companies (LFCs) from internal resources, 500 of which were under the Namo Drone Didi scheme. State-wise, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh led the initial distribution. The Agricultural Development and Rural Transformation Centre (ADRTC) conducted a study indicating kisan drones can cover 1 acre in 7–8 minutes, with flight times between 5–20 minutes per charge depending on the manufacturer.
Transportation emerged as a significant hurdle for Drone Didis, with 42.68% reporting issues, particularly in southern regions, where 78.82% faced challenges. To resolve this, under the SMAM programme, 80% financial assistance is granted for purchasing multi-utility vehicles that can also transport drones. This move supports better accessibility while reducing operational costs for SHGs.

The scheme has not only empowered women through advanced training but also diversified their traditional agricultural roles. SHGs are now offering drone spraying services and consulting on modern agri-tech, thereby expanding revenue streams. This initiative has significantly boosted technological adoption and self-sufficiency in rural communities.
The Namo Drone Didi scheme stands out as a transformative step in rural empowerment by integrating SHGs into India’s growing agri-tech economy. Through structured support, training, and technological access, the initiative enhances both agricultural productivity and women’s financial independence.
