As per a Business Standard report, the Maharashtra government will waive around ₹48,000 crore in pending electricity dues of farmers, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Wednesday.
The proposed decision is intended to clear old arrears that have prevented several farmers from receiving new agricultural electricity connections. According to the chief minister, electricity charges for agricultural pumps of up to 7.5 horsepower had already been waived.
However, many farmers were still unable to obtain fresh connections because unpaid dues from previous years continued to remain against their accounts. The state will take a decision to write off those pending dues.
The announcement was made at a programme in Mumbai where farmers felicitated Fadnavis after the launch of the Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Farmer Loan Waiver Scheme.
The scheme provides for the waiver of crop loans of up to ₹2 lakh. The state government said around 56 lakh farmers are expected to be covered under the scheme, which was announced with an outlay of ₹36,585 crore. Agriculture Minister Dattatray Bharane later said the allocation has been revised to ₹40,585 crore.
Fadnavis said farmers who were left out because of conditions attached to the earlier Mahatma Jyotirao Phule farm loan waiver scheme would now be eligible. He also said the requirement for regular loan repayment during 2026-27 has been removed.
The chief minister said the Centre and the Maharashtra government together are expected to spend around ₹95,000 crore on the agriculture sector this year through various programmes.
The expenditure will cover irrigation projects, water conservation works, cold storage facilities, food processing units, value-addition projects, and market infrastructure.
Fadnavis said work on river-linking projects and other water conservation measures is continuing in different parts of the state. He said diversion barrages are being planned to transfer excess floodwater from the Satara-Sangli region to drought-affected areas of Marathwada.
He also referred to the promotion of natural farming practices, including Jeevamrut, along with technologies such as fertigation systems, automated drip irrigation, and Artificial Intelligence.
