The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) plans to enhance the ticket booking system as per The Economic Times news report.

It plans to increase its capacity from 37,000 to over 1 lakh tickets per minute. This upgrade seeks to address issues related to heavy traffic and disruptions during high-demand periods.

IRCTC’s Capacity Boost Aims for Enhanced Efficiency

As per The Indian Express news report, IRCTC is strengthening its Next Generation e-Ticketing (NGET) platform. The improvements involve upgrading key infrastructure components such as servers, storage, and networking.

These changes are expected to significantly boost the system's ability to handle increased booking volume. The current system processes about 37,000 tickets per minute. Post-upgrade, this figure is anticipated to exceed 1 lakh tickets per minute.

The modernisation involves an investment of around ₹150 crore, focusing on enhancing the overall passenger reservation system infrastructure.

Disaster Recovery Measures to Minimise Service Disruptions

The corporation is also developing an active-active disaster recovery system intended to maintain seamless service in case of infrastructure failures.

Should one system encounter issues, the backup can manage traffic, limiting disruptions. Considerations are underway to establish this facility in Secunderabad.

High-demand booking periods, particularly for popular trains, underscore the importance of maintaining uninterrupted service. The new system is aimed at mitigating disruptions, ensuring passengers can book seats more reliably.

Redesigned Website for a Streamlined User Experience

Recently, IRCTC launched a beta version of its website, featuring a cleaner, simpler interface. This redesign was influenced by suggestions from students at Malaviya National Institute of Technology. The updated platform aims to make essential features, like seat availability, more accessible to users.

Additional improvements include a reduction of CAPTCHA checks, pop-ups, and graphics, contributing to a streamlined booking interface. The platform also simplifies the process by presenting seat availability for different travel classes concurrently, helping users make more informed choices.

Conclusion

IRCTC’s plans for enhancement from 37,000 to over 1 lakh tickets per minute aims to improve online ticket booking. The implementation of an active-active disaster recovery system and a redesigned website seek to offer users a more reliable and streamlined experience.
