India’s LPG and LNG Imports from US Rise as West Asia Conflict Cuts Gulf Supplies

India has increased purchases of LPG and LNG from the United States as the conflict in West Asia has disrupted supplies from Gulf producers, as per The Economic Times news report.  

The effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz has affected energy shipments through one of the region's main export routes. 

Kpler data showed India imported about 0.89 million tonnes of LPG from the US in July 2026, followed by 0.62 million tonnes in August 2026. The US accounted for more than 73% of India's LPG imports. 

Traditional LPG Suppliers See Lower Volumes 

The July 2026, shipment from the US was close to India's highest monthly LPG import from the UAE, which was 0.891 million tonnes in October 2025. UAE volumes have since fallen sharply. 

India received about 140,000 tonnes of LPG from the UAE in August and around 60,000 tonnes from Qatar. Saudi Arabia did not supply LPG to India in either July or August. 

LNG Supplies Follow a Similar Pattern 

Changes have also emerged in LNG purchases. Qatar has historically been India's largest supplier, with monthly volumes reaching as much as 1.2 million tonnes. Its LNG shipments to India fell to zero in April. 

Imports from the US stood at about 0.72 million tonnes in July and increased to 0.75 million tonnes in August. India has also sourced additional LNG cargoes from other Atlantic Basin and non-traditional suppliers. 

Longer Voyages Raise Import Costs 

Cargoes from the US and other distant suppliers take longer to reach India than shipments from the Gulf. This has increased freight costs, while insurance expenses have also risen. 

Tighter availability from Middle Eastern producers and higher international prices have added to the cost of India's LPG and LNG imports. The higher bill reflects both supply shortages and the use of longer shipping routes. 

Russia Retains Lead in Crude 

India's crude oil imports have followed a different pattern. Russia remained the country's largest supplier in August, with imports of almost 2 million barrels per day, while the UAE continued to send significant volumes. 

Venezuela supplied India with 383,000 barrels per day in August. The recent changes in India's energy trade have been most visible in LPG and LNG, while crude purchases remain spread across Russia, the UAE, Venezuela and other suppliers.

India's LPG and LNG imports from the US have increased as supplies from Gulf producers were disrupted. Russia, the UAE and Venezuela remain important sources of crude oil.
