India, Seychelles to Strengthen Cooperation in Fisheries and Blue Economy

India and Seychelles spent Wednesday's fisheries discussions looking at some very practical areas of cooperation, including tuna fisheries, aquaculture, hatcheries and marine research, as per PIB press release. The meeting was also used to review existing arrangements and discuss a joint roadmap for using marine resources more sustainably.
Seychelles delegation was led by Wallace Cosgrow, Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Blue Economy,while India's side was headed by Abhilaksh Likhi, Secretary, Department of Fisheries.
More Work Planned Around Tuna and Aquaculture
The discussions covered modern hatcheries, tuna fisheries optimisation, fish-stock assessment and marine conservation. The two countries also looked at technical studies, fisheries extension services and institutional training as ways to share knowledge.
India highlighted the size of its own fisheries sector during the meeting. Fish production has reached 19.7 million tonnes while seafood exports are valued at $8.46 billion.
Technology Enters Fisheries Discussion
The talks went beyond fishing and farming. India and Seychelles discussed fisheries data systems, monitoring and surveillance infrastructure and the possible use of artificial intelligence in harvest management.
There was also a focus on what happens after the catch reaches shore. Tuna processing, product diversification and the management of fish waste were among the areas considered for cooperation.
Seychelles Seeks Faster Progress on MoU
Seychelles expressed interest in moving ahead with bilateral MoU covering fisheries and aquaculture, backed by a detailed work plan.
The two sides also discussed joint scientific research, reciprocal access to laboratories and pilot projects. Mutual visits, technical exchanges and greater cooperation between national Centres of Excellence were proposed to support training and institutional capacity.
Conclusion
The India-Seychelles discussions brought together fisheries, aquaculture, tuna, marine research and technology, with the two countries also considering a formal MoU and a continuing framework for technical cooperation.
