The Maharashtra government has sanctioned a ₹923 crore project to establish an Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) across 869 accident-prone locations.

This initiative aims to improve road safety over 21,400 km of roads in 36 districts using advanced 4G/5G technology.

Project Overview

The ITMS project, approved by the Maharashtra government, targets 869 accident-prone areas, also known as black spots, across the state.

Spanning 21,400 km of roads in 36 districts, the project will utilise 4G/5G-based technology to enhance traffic management and road safety. The estimated cost for this initiative is ₹923 crore.

Supreme Court's Role in Road Safety

In 2015, the Supreme Court constituted a Road Safety Committee to oversee road safety issues and submit reports.

The committee mandated the creation of a separate road safety fund, leading to the establishment of a ‘Road Safety Fund Control Committee’ in September 2016. This committee is responsible for approving various road safety projects.

Administrative Approval and Implementation

The Maharashtra government has granted administrative approval for the ITMS project. The system will be implemented at 869 black spots across 36 districts, leveraging 4G/5G mobile technology. Control rooms will be established in key locations including Thane, Panvel, Pune, Nashik, and others.

Control Rooms Across Districts

To ensure effective monitoring and management, control rooms will be set up in various districts such as Satara, Dhule, Kolhapur, Ahmednagar, Ratnagiri, Aurangabad, and others. These control rooms will play a crucial role in coordinating traffic management efforts across the state.

Conclusion

The approval of the ₹923 crore ITMS project by the Maharashtra government marks a significant step towards enhancing road safety across the state. By targeting 869 accident-prone areas with advanced technology, the initiative aims to reduce road accidents and improve traffic management.
