Indian Railways has made significant advancements in modernising its track infrastructure and enhancing safety measures. Through sustained investment and focused execution over the past 11 years, these efforts have led to safer, faster, and more reliable train operations nationwide.

Track Renewal and Safety Enhancements

During the financial year 2024-25, Indian Railways completed track renewal over 6,851 km. In the current financial year 2025-26, more than 7,500 km of track renewal work is underway. Additionally, 7,900 km of track renewal is planned for 2026-27, reflecting a continued focus on asset reliability and safety.

Significant progress has also been made in turnout renewal, crucial for smooth train movement. In 2024-25, 7,161 Thick Web Switches and 1,704 Weldable CMS Crossings were provided. In 2025-26, over 8,000 Thick Web Switches and more than 3,000 Weldable CMS Crossings are being installed.

Mechanised Maintenance and Safety Fencing

Mechanised deep screening of ballast, essential for maintaining track stability and improving ride quality, has been consistently carried out. In 2024-25, 7,442 km of deep screening was completed, while over 7,500 km is being undertaken in 2025-26.

To support mechanised maintenance and improve productivity, Indian Railways has expanded its track machine fleet significantly. More than 1,100 track machines have been procured since 2014, enabling faster and more efficient maintenance.

High-Speed Operations and Safety Measures

Safety fencing along railway tracks has been prioritised to minimise cattle run-over incidents and trespassing, enhancing overall safety. Approximately 15,000 km of fencing has been provided, improving safety on sections where trains operate at speeds exceeding 110 kmph.

As a result of these efforts, the length of track permitting speeds of 110 kmph and above has increased from 31,445 km in 2014 to 84,244 km, enabling faster and more efficient train operations.

Conclusion

Indian Railways has made substantial progress in track modernisation and safety, with significant track renewal, mechanised maintenance, and safety measures in place. These initiatives have enhanced the efficiency and safety of train operations across the national network.
