India Set to Expand E-2-Wheeler Subsidies Through Extended PM E-Drive Scheme to Boost Clean Mobility

India is set to enhance its support for electric 2-wheelers by infusing additional funding into the PM E-Drive scheme. This decision comes as the country aims to reduce its dependence on oil imports while promoting clean mobility.
Extended Support for Electric Two-Wheelers
As per The Mint report, the ₹10,900 crore PM E-Drive scheme initially earmarked ₹1,772 crore to subsidise electric 2-wheelers until the end of FY26. However, as sales targets were not achieved, the scheme has been extended to the end of July.
This extension aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for increased electric mobility. As of May 24, the government had subsidised 2.35 million vehicles against its initial goal of 2.47 million.
Increased Subsidy Allocation in Progress
As the PM E-Drive scheme nears its original end, the heavy industries ministry is seeking additional funds to further subsidise electric two-wheelers. The revised plan will likely include an increase in the subsidy amount, though details remain under consideration.
The existing subsidy structure provided ₹5,000 per kilowatt-hour for the first year, reducing to ₹2,500 in the second year.
Surge in Electric Two-Wheeler Sales
The market has witnessed a significant rise in electric two-wheeler sales, growing from 2,52,787 units in FY22 to 1.46 million in FY26.
This surge is juxtaposed against a decline in petrol two-wheeler sales, which have dropped from 1.32 crore units in FY22 to 1.1 crore in FY26.

Impact on Fossil Fuel Dependency
The shift towards electric two-wheelers is crucial for India's energy strategy. Two-wheelers currently account for nearly two-thirds of the country's petrol consumption, which was 42.6 million tonnes in FY26.
A transition to electric modes is expected to substantially cut this reliance.
Challenges and Opportunities
This increased subsidy allocation aims to narrow the price gap between electric two-wheelers and their petrol counterparts, promoting greater adoption.
However, along with demand-side incentives, adjustments in supply-side policies are also necessary to ensure successful electrification.
Conclusion
In summary, India's decision to increase subsidies under the PM E-Drive scheme underscores its commitment to reducing fossil fuel dependence. By bridging the cost gap between petrol and electric vehicles, the initiative aims to foster a significant shift towards electric mobility within the country.
