India’s Registered Investor Base Rises to 13.37 Crore; North India Records Fastest Growth

India had 13.37 crore registered investors in July 2026, up from 2.75 crore in FY2019, according to The Moneycontrol news report citing the National Stock Exchange’s August edition of Market Pulse.
The growth in investor registrations has also changed the distribution of investors across states and regions. The top five states now account for a smaller portion of the total investor base than they did seven years ago.
Maharashtra Still Leads, UP Closes In
Maharashtra remained the largest investor market with 2.07 crore registered investors, or 15.5% of the total. Uttar Pradesh was second with 1.59 crore investors, accounting for 11.9%, followed by Gujarat with 1.13 crore, or 8.5%.
West Bengal had 79.6 lakh registered investors and Rajasthan had 77.1 lakh. Together, these five states accounted for 47.6% of all registered investors, down from 52.8% in FY19.
UP, Bihar and Other States Gain Share
Maharashtra’s share of the investor base fell from 19.4% in FY19 to 15.5% in July 2026. Gujarat’s share dropped from 12.5% to 8.5% during the same period.
Uttar Pradesh, meanwhile, increased its share from 7.2% to 11.9%. Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and West Bengal also accounted for a larger share of registered investors than they did in FY19.
North India Sees Faster Growth
North India had 4.93 crore registered investors in July 2026, making up 36.9% of the national total. The region’s investor base has grown 6.4 times since FY19, compared with sixfold growth in East India.
West India had 3.89 crore investors, followed by South India with 2.82 crore and East India with 1.62 crore. West and South India have lost share over the period.
Registrations Rise in July 2026
A total of 13.3 lakh new investors registered in July 2026, 14.1% higher than in June. However, the number was 12.1% lower than the registrations recorded in July 2025.
North India added 5.3 lakh investors during the month, followed by West India with 3.3 lakh, South India with 3.1 lakh and East India with 1.6 lakh.
Younger Investors Account for Most New Additions
Investors below 30 accounted for 37.9% of the registered investor base as of June 2026. Those aged 30 to 39 made up another 30.2%, while the median age stood at 33 years.
Among investors registered so far in FY27, 59% were below 30, compared with 56.4% in FY26. The median age of a new investor was 27 years.

Conclusion
The investor base has grown nearly fivefold since FY19, while participation has become more geographically spread. North India led regional growth, and investors below 30 formed the largest share of new additions.
