India’s Installed Renewable Energy Capacity Reaches 288.58 GW as Solar Soars

Installed renewable energy capacity of India has nearly quadrupled over the past 12 years, increasing from 76.38 GW in 2014 to 288.58 GW as of June 30, 2026, according to data shared by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in the Rajya Sabha, as per news reports.
Solar Continues to Lead Renewable Energy Growth
Solar energy remained the largest contributor to India's renewable energy portfolio with an installed capacity of 162.15 GW.
Wind power accounted for 57.44 GW, while hydropower capacity was at 57.24 GW. Bio power contributed another 11.75 GW, further diversifying the country's renewable energy base.
Non-Fossil Fuel Capacity Reaches 297.36 GW
Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik informed the Rajya Sabha that India's total installed electricity generation capacity from non-fossil fuel sources stood at 297.36 GW as of June 30, 2026.
The total includes 288.58 GW of renewable energy capacity and 8.78 GW of nuclear power capacity, highlighting the increasing contribution of clean energy to India's power generation mix.
Renewable Sector Attracts Strong Investments
The government said the renewable energy sector attracted approximately $45.72 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) between FY2014 and FY2026.
Domestic financing also remained robust, with 12 public sector banks, along with institutions including IREDA, PFC, REC Limited, IIFCL, NaBFID and SIDBI, collectively deploying ₹12.32 lakh crore towards renewable energy projects.
