India has achieved a remarkable expansion in renewable energy, adding 31.25 GW of non-fossil capacity in FY 25-26.
This includes a major solar push in Odisha through the deployment of 1.5 lakh rooftop solar systems under the new Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA) model, aiming to positively impact nearly 8 lakh citizens.
Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Shri Pralhad Joshi announced that India recorded its highest-ever non-fossil capacity addition of 31.25 GW in FY 25-26. Out of this, 24.28 GW came from solar alone.
Speaking at the Global Energy Leaders’ Summit 2025 in Puri, Odisha, the Minister highlighted India’s rising influence in driving global clean energy momentum. From FY 22 to 24 alone, India added 46 GW to global solar capacity, becoming the third-largest contributor globally.
Solar capacity in India has witnessed a growth from 2.8 GW to 130 GW over the past 11 years, registering a surge of over 4,500%.
This rapid development cements the country’s transformation into a key player in the clean energy domain despite its continued coal consumption and reserves.
At the same summit, the Minister launched the Utility-Led Aggregation model for Odisha under the PM Surya Ghar initiative. The State will receive 1.5 lakh rooftop solar systems of 1 kW capacity each, targeting 7–8 lakh citizens, especially from economically weaker households.
This builds on the existing adoption in Odisha, which has 3.1 GW of installed renewable capacity, now comprising over 34% of the State’s total power capacity.
So far, under PM Surya Ghar Yojana, 1.6 lakh households have applied for rooftop solar in Odisha, with 23,000 installations completed.
Over 19,200 beneficiaries have received subsidies totalling more than ₹147 crore directly into their bank accounts.
