India and Norway have strengthened their scientific and technological partnership through a series of agreements signed in Oslo during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Norway.

The collaborations bring together Indian research institutions and leading Norwegian organisations to advance joint work in innovation, sustainability, renewable energy, ocean sciences, geosciences, and academic cooperation.

The agreements were signed under the leadership of Dr N Kalaiselvi, Director General of CSIR and Secretary, DSIR, and are aimed at expanding long-term institutional linkages while promoting collaborative research and technology development.

CSIR And Norwegian Institutions Deepen Research Collaboration

A key agreement was signed between the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and the Research Council of Norway to strengthen cooperation in research, innovation, technology development, and capacity building.

The framework will facilitate collaborative research projects, scientific exchanges, joint workshops, and specialised programmes addressing global challenges linked to climate action, healthcare, clean energy, and ocean sustainability.

CSIR also renewed and expanded its cooperation with Norway-based research organisation SINTEF through a new collaboration programme covering the period from 2026 to 2029.

The partnership will focus on accelerating sustainable industrial transformation through research in bio-based materials, circular economy solutions, carbon management technologies, offshore renewable energy systems, and waste-to-value initiatives.

Focus On Offshore Wind, Sustainability and Academic Partnerships

One of the major outcomes was a dedicated project collaboration involving multiple CSIR laboratories and SINTEF institutions for advancing offshore renewable energy technologies.

The programme will focus on floating offshore wind systems, energy efficiency improvements, sustainability standards, pilot-scale demonstrations, skill development, and industry participation. The initiative is expected to contribute to India's renewable energy expansion and long-term carbon reduction objectives.

In the academic space, CSIR, the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR), and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) signed a joint declaration to promote cooperation in sustainability, healthcare technologies, infrastructure engineering, circular economy, and ocean sciences.

The partnership includes student mobility programmes, faculty exchanges, joint academic activities, and collaborative research initiatives.

Separately, CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute entered into a 5-year collaboration with Emerald Geomodelling to support geoscience-based solutions for infrastructure development projects.

The cooperation will include joint studies, advanced data modelling, survey planning, technical consultancy, and specialised training programmes.
