PM Jan Dhan Yojana Completes 12 Years; Accounts Cross 59 Crore, Deposits Reach ₹3.17 Lakh Crore

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) has completed 12 years, with the number of bank accounts opened under the scheme crossing 59 crores, as per a PIB press release.
Total deposits in these accounts stood at ₹3.17 lakh crore as of August 19, 2026.
Majority of Accounts in Rural Areas
About 78% of PMJDY accounts are in rural and semi-urban areas, while women account for around 56% of account holders.
The average deposit per account stood at ₹5,356 as of August 19. According to the Finance Ministry, the average deposit has increased 3.4 times over the 12 years since the scheme was launched.
RuPay Cards and Overdraft Facility
PMJDY account holders can open a basic bank account without a minimum balance requirement or maintenance charges. Eligible account holders are also issued RuPay debit cards with accident insurance cover of up to ₹2 lakh.
A total of 41.29 crore RuPay cards have been issued under the scheme. Account holders who meet the eligibility requirements can also access an overdraft facility of up to ₹10,000.
Use in Direct Benefit Transfers
The scheme is a part of the Jan-Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile, or JAM, framework, which is used to transfer government welfare benefits directly into beneficiaries' bank accounts.
The Finance Ministry said the system has reduced the involvement of intermediaries and delays in the transfer of financial assistance. PMJDY accounts have also been used to provide access to credit, including MUDRA loans, for eligible account holders.
Insurance and Pension Access
The accounts have also served as a route for access to insurance and pension schemes, particularly for workers in the unorganised sector. These include the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana.
Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said the scheme's progress should be considered beyond the number of accounts opened. The government has continued account coverage drives across states and districts.
Twelve years after its launch, PMJDY has more than 59 crore accounts and continues to be used for banking services, benefit transfers, insurance, pensions and access to credit.
