India has significantly expanded its natural gas infrastructure as part of its long-term energy transition strategy, with pipeline connectivity improving across regions and consumption of cleaner fuels gaining momentum.
According to a year-end update from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, India’s operational natural gas pipeline network has reached 25,429 kilometres.
In addition, pipeline construction is underway for another 10,459 kilometres, taking the country closer to a fully integrated national gas grid.
The expansion is designed to enhance energy security, improve supply reliability and facilitate wider adoption of natural gas across industrial, commercial and household segments.
To support equitable access, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board has implemented the “One Nation, One Grid, One Tariff” regime.
Under this framework, gas transportation charges have been standardised across nearly 90% of the pipeline network, helping reduce regional cost differences and improve price transparency for consumers.
Ensuring access to clean cooking fuel remains a central government priority. Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, beneficiary coverage has expanded to around 10.35 crore households as of December 1, 2025.
To address pending demand and move towards saturation, the government has approved 25 lakh additional LPG connections for FY26. The eligibility process has also been simplified through a single self-declaration mechanism, easing access for eligible households.
LPG affordability continues to be supported through a targeted subsidy of ₹300 per cylinder for eligible beneficiaries, contributing to steady growth in consumption.
The ministry also highlighted parallel progress in areas such as digital payments at fuel stations, enhanced safety inspections, ethanol blending in petrol, and the allocation of new oil and gas exploration blocks as part of broader energy sector reforms.

The expansion of India’s gas pipeline network, combined with tariff uniformity and wider LPG coverage, reflects a coordinated push towards cleaner, more accessible energy. As pipeline connectivity deepens and fuel affordability improves, natural gas is set to play a larger role in supporting India’s energy security and transition goals.
