India has begun an anti-dumping investigation covering imports of Cold Rolled Grain Oriented (CRGO) Electrical Steel and Amorphous Metal, materials widely used in transformer manufacturing, as per a PTI news report.

The action follows concerns raised by a domestic producer regarding the impact of low-priced imports on the local industry.

Domestic Industry Raises Concerns

The case was initiated after JSW JFE Electrical Steel Nashik Pvt Ltd submitted a complaint to the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR).

According to the company, imports of CRGO Electrical Steel and Amorphous Metal at low prices are causing significant harm to domestic manufacturers.

Imports from 4 Countries Under Review

The investigation covers imports from China, Japan, Korea and Russia. The DGTR stated that it received a duly substantiated application and found sufficient prima facie evidence to initiate an anti-dumping investigation into the products.

The authority will examine the existence, extent and impact of the alleged dumping, including imports originating from China and Japan.

Importance of the Products

CRGO Electrical Steel and Amorphous Metal are primarily used in the manufacture of power transformer cores and distribution transformer cores.

The products are used by transformer manufacturers serving utilities, industrial consumers and renewable energy projects, making them important materials within the power equipment supply chain.

Other Ongoing Investigations

India has also initiated anti-dumping investigations concerning imports of sodium nitrite from China and para nonylphenol from Russia and Taiwan.

These investigations form part of the country's trade remedy framework used to assess the impact of imported goods on domestic industries.

WTO’s Framework

The anti-dumping investigations are conducted to determine whether domestic producers have suffered injury due to low-priced imports.

Such measures operate under the framework of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). India has previously imposed anti-dumping duties on a range of products imported from different countries, including China.
