
India’s negotiations on a trade agreement with the European Union have reached an advanced stage, according to Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.
At the same time, discussions with the United States on a bilateral trade arrangement are continuing.
These parallel developments reflect India’s ongoing efforts to strengthen international trade partnerships.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated that negotiations for the India–European Union trade agreement are in their final stages.
He shared this update while delivering a keynote address at the Regional MSME Conclave in Rajkot, Gujarat.
The minister also confirmed that trade discussions with the United States are progressing through continued engagement.
Recent meetings between Indian officials and European Union representatives have indicated steady progress in trade discussions. Both sides have reported that outstanding issues have reduced in number, and negotiating teams have been instructed to accelerate talks to resolve pending matters. The objective is to reach a balanced agreement at the earliest opportunity.
The European Union remains India’s largest trading partner in goods. Bilateral trade between India and the EU was valued at over $136 billion in the 2024–25 period. The proposed agreement is expected to provide a structured framework for future trade engagement between the two regions.
Alongside EU negotiations, India continues discussions with the United States on a proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement. Multiple rounds of talks have already taken place, and US officials have indicated a positive outlook on further negotiations. The next round of discussions is expected to be scheduled shortly.
