The Indian government has dismissed as false a letter circulating on social media that claimed India had temporarily suspended trade operations with Afghanistan due to unrest in Iran. Authorities urged people not to share unverified information and to rely only on official sources.
The clarification followed the spread of a purported official letter on social media platforms. India’s fact-checking agency stated that the document was fabricated and had no basis in fact. It added that the content was being amplified by propaganda-linked social media handles and did not reflect India’s policy or actions.
The government emphasised that there has been no decision to halt trade with Afghanistan. It also cautioned citizens against forwarding unverified messages that could create confusion during a period of regional instability.
India continues to maintain trade relations with Afghanistan despite tensions in the wider region. Official data shows that in 2024–25, India’s exports to Afghanistan were valued at USD 318.91 million, while imports from the country stood at USD 689.81 million. These figures underline the continued economic engagement between the two countries.
There has been no official notification or policy change indicating a pause or suspension in trade flows.
The false claim emerged amid widespread protests in Iran, driven by economic hardship, rising prices and public anger against the leadership. Rights groups have reported significant casualties and arrests during the unrest, while Iranian authorities have sought to contain the situation through security measures and restrictions on internet services.
Iran’s economy has been under severe strain following recent conflict, renewed international sanctions and a sharp fall in the value of its currency. Inflation remains high, and the rising cost of essential goods has added to public pressure.
The situation has been further complicated by the United States announcing plans to impose fresh tariffs on countries that continue to do business with Iran. The proposed measures have raised uncertainty over how trade and financial links would be defined and enforced.
India is already facing scrutiny from Washington over its energy imports from Russia and is subject to higher cumulative tariffs. These developments have added to concerns about global trade disruptions but have not altered India’s stated position on its trade with Afghanistan.

The Indian government has clearly denied claims of suspending trade with Afghanistan, calling the circulating letter fake and misleading. Despite regional unrest and rising global tensions, India’s trade ties with Afghanistan remain intact. The episode highlights the importance of verifying information and relying on official sources, especially during periods of geopolitical uncertainty.
