India and Australia are expected to finalise a uranium supply agreement during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Melbourne this week, as per The Economic Times news reports.

The proposed pact is to be one of the key outcomes of his meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Australia is home to around one-third of the world's known uranium reserves. Although India and Australia signed a civil nuclear cooperation framework more than a decade ago, uranium exports under that arrangement have yet to begin.

The leaders are also expected to review progress in other areas of bilateral cooperation. Discussions are likely to cover critical minerals, cybersecurity, emerging technologies, clean energy and supply-chain resilience.

These sectors have become a larger part of the India-Australia agenda in recent years as both governments seek to broaden economic and strategic engagement.

PM Narendra Modi is also scheduled to participate in the India-Australia CEOs Forum. The event is expected to include discussions on investment opportunities in manufacturing, technology, and clean energy.

Trade Relationship Continues to Expand

Economic ties between the two countries have strengthened following the implementation of the India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA).

The agreement came into force on 29 December 2022 and provides immediate zero-duty access for 98.3% of Australian goods entering India, while Indian exports receive duty-free access to the Australian market.

Bilateral trade in goods and services reached $54.4 billion in FY25, making India Australia's fifth-largest trading partner. In February 2025, Australia also launched A New Roadmap for Australia's Economic Engagement with India, outlining measures for expanding trade and investment links.

Growth Across Multiple Sectors

Trade under the ECTA has widened beyond traditional sectors. India's exports of textiles, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and agricultural products have increased, while imports from Australia continue to include base metals, raw cotton, chemicals, fertilisers and pulses used by Indian industries.
