
India and the European Union (EU) have reinforced their commitment to sustainable ship recycling, focusing on the inclusion of Indian facilities under the EU Ship Recycling Regulation (EUSRR) as per The PIB news report. This collaboration aims to enhance India's position as a leader in environmentally responsible ship recycling.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and EU Commissioner Jessika Roswall discussed the ongoing audit and compliance process for Indian ship recycling yards. Over 30 Indian yards have applied for EU recognition, with 6 currently undergoing compliance checks. 3 facilities have completed all procedures and are eligible for EUSRR inclusion.
India's share in global ship recycling increased from 30.1% in 2024 to 35.4% in 2025, recycling 2.99 million gross tons (GT) of ships in 2025, a 60% growth from 2024.
India plans to recycle 16,000 ships over the next decade, committing $8 billion to enhance shipbuilding and recycling sectors. Indian yards have invested in infrastructure upgrades to meet international standards, supported by robust environmental and worker welfare measures.

Commissioner Roswall proposed a Joint Working Group to facilitate coordination and support the next phase of the process. The EU emphasised unannounced inspections to maintain high standards of compliance and transparency.
Roswall expressed willingness to visit Indian facilities post-consultation and assessment, aligning with the India-EU Free Trade Agreement and the Hong Kong International Convention for Safe Ship Recycling.
India's ship recycling sector, with a 35.4% global market share, is advancing through cooperation with the EU. 3 Indian yards are ready for EU recognition, supported by $8 billion investment and infrastructure upgrades.
