In 2025, India witnessed its largest renewable energy expansion yet, adding 44.5 GW till November and pushing its total non-fossil power capacity beyond 262 GW. Solar and wind energy were key contributors to this surge.

Solar and Wind Energy Drive Capacity Growth

India achieved its highest-ever renewable energy capacity addition in 2025, with 44.51 GW installed till November. This marks a near 80% increase from the 24.72 GW added during the same period in 2024.

Solar energy led the way with 34.98 GW, contributing to a total solar installed capacity of 132.85 GW, crossing the 100 GW mark in January 2025. This represents a 41% rise from 94.17 GW in November 2024.

Wind energy also grew significantly, adding 5.82 GW and bringing the total to 53.99 GW by November, a 12.5% increase from 47.96 GW.

India Crosses 50% Non-Fossil Installed Capacity Milestone

By June 2025, India achieved 50% of its total electric capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, 5 years ahead of the 2030 target under the Paris Agreement.

As of November 2025, India's non-fossil electric capacity reached 262.74 GW out of a total of 509.64 GW, accounting for 51.5%. Renewable energy (including large hydro) stood at 253.96 GW, while nuclear contributed 8.78 GW.

Policy Support and Schemes Fuel Expansion

The PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, launched in February 2024, supported rooftop solar in over 14.43 lakh installations by December 22, 2025. Similarly, the PM-KUSUM scheme saw installation of 13.13 lakh solar pumps and 6515 MW of solar capacity in 2025 alone.

Solar PV manufacturing saw a rapid increase with 81 GW module capacity added in 2025, raising the total to 144 GW under ALMM.

Growth Beyond Solar and Wind

Other renewables also contributed to the 2025 expansion. Bio energy reached 11.61 GW and small hydro touched 5.16 GW. Hybrid and round-the-clock (RTC) projects under implementation stood at 59.24 GW. Large hydro reached 50.35 GW, totalling renewable energy installed capacity at 253.96 GW.

Conclusion

With substantial additions in solar and wind capacity during 2025, India not only set a new record in renewable energy growth but also achieved 51.5% of its electric capacity from non-fossil sources, well ahead of schedule.
