ArcelorMittal has announced an investment of about $900 million to develop three renewable energy projects in India, as per news report.

The projects will add a combined 1 gigawatt (GW) of nominal solar and wind capacity and will be located across Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Gujarat. The company said the projects will be developed over the next few years.

Capacity Impact in India

With the commissioning of these projects, ArcelorMittal’s renewable energy capacity in India is expected to rise to 2 GW, doubling its current level.

On a global basis, the company’s renewable portfolio will increase to 3.3 GW, including projects under development in Brazil and Argentina through joint ventures.

Maharashtra Solar Project

In Maharashtra, ArcelorMittal plans to set up a 36 megawatt (MW) solar power plant at Amravati. The project is scheduled to be completed by the 1st half of 2027.

Power generated from the plant will be supplied to the company’s steelmaking operations in India.

Rajasthan Solar and Storage Facility

The 2nd project will be located at Bikaner in Rajasthan. It will consist of a 400 MW solar power plant integrated with a 500 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system.

The project is expected to be commissioned by June 2028 and is intended to support a more consistent power supply.

Gujarat Integrated Renewable Project

The 3rd project will be developed at Bachau in Gujarat. It will include 250 MW of wind capacity, 300 MW of solar power, and a 300 MWh battery storage system.

Completion of this integrated renewable facility is targeted for the 1st half of 2028.

Power Supply to AMNS India

Electricity from all 3 projects will be supplied to AMNS India, a Gujarat-based steel producer. AMNS India is a 60:40 joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Japan’s Nippon Steel.

ArcelorMittal said its existing 1 GW renewable project in India has already started supplying power to AMNS India.

Emissions and Energy Use

AMNS India is also developing a separate 550 MW renewable project at Bachau, comprising 300 MW of solar and 250 MW of wind capacity. This project is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 0.9 million tonnes annually.

Together, the existing and planned projects are expected to cut up to 4 million tonnes of emissions and meet about 35% of the electricity demand at AMNS India’s Hazira steel plant.

Conclusion

The 3 projects will expand ArcelorMittal’s renewable energy base in India while increasing the share of clean power used in its domestic steel operations.
