India has reached a significant milestone in its renewable energy journey with 100 GW of solar PV module manufacturing capacity now enlisted under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM).
This achievement marks an extraordinary leap from just 2.3 GW in 2014, reflecting the nation’s rapid progress towards self-reliance in solar manufacturing and its commitment to the global clean energy transition.
Highlighting this milestone, Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Shri Pralhad Joshi said in a press release, “India has achieved a historic milestone -100 GW Solar PV Module Manufacturing Capacity under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), a remarkable rise from just 2.3 GW in 2014! Driven by the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and transformative initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for High-Efficiency Solar Modules, we are building a robust, self-reliant solar manufacturing ecosystem. This achievement strengthens our path towards Atmanirbhar Bharat and the target of 500 GW non-fossil capacity by 2030.”
The expansion reflects the combined effect of forward-looking policies and the government’s determination to position India as a global player in the solar value chain.
The Government of India has backed the sector through initiatives such as the PLI Scheme for High-Efficiency Solar PV Modules and policy measures that create a level playing field for domestic manufacturers. These interventions have catalysed growth from 2.3 GW in 2014 to over 100 GW today, reinforcing India’s 2030 goal of 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity.
The ALMM Order, issued on 2 January 2019, saw its first list published on 10 March 2021 with an initial 8.2 GW capacity. In just over 4 years, capacity has multiplied more than twelvefold. The number of enlisted manufacturers has risen from 21 in 2021 to 100 today, operating a total of 123 manufacturing units.
This growth has been fuelled by both established companies and new entrants, many of whom have adopted high-efficiency technologies and vertically integrated operations. The result is a vibrant and competitive manufacturing ecosystem capable of serving domestic requirements while meeting global demand.
The crossing of the 100 GW mark is a testament to the collective efforts of industry, state governments and the central government in advancing India’s solar PV manufacturing capabilities.
