As per PIB report, India has reached a significant milestone in public healthcare by achieving over 50,000 certifications under the National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS).
This accomplishment underscores the government's commitment to improving healthcare quality and accessibility nationwide.
As of December 31, 2025, 50,373 public health facilities across India have been certified under the NQAS framework. This initiative, launched by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in 2015, began with only 10 certified facilities.
The programme initially focused on District Hospitals and has since expanded to include Sub-District Hospitals, Community Health Centres, and Ayushman Arogya Mandirs at various levels.
The NQAS framework aims to ensure safe, patient-centric, and quality-assured healthcare services.
The introduction of Virtual Assessments has significantly accelerated the certification process, with certified facilities increasing from 6,506 in December 2023 to 22,786 in December 2024, and further to 50,373 by December 2025.
The rapid expansion of NQAS certification includes 48,663 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and 1,710 secondary care facilities.
This growth reflects a systematic approach to institutionalising quality across all levels of public healthcare.
The initiative aligns with India's pursuit of Universal Health Coverage, as outlined in the National Health Policy 2017, which emphasises quality and affordability without financial hardship.

The success of the NQAS programme can be attributed to multi-pronged strategies, including continuous capacity building, digital innovations, and an increased pool of assessors.
These efforts have facilitated continuous quality improvement mechanisms, ensuring that quality becomes an intrinsic attribute of public healthcare delivery.
India's achievement of over 50,000 NQAS certifications marks a significant advancement in public healthcare quality. This milestone highlights the nation's dedication to providing equitable access to high-quality healthcare services, particularly for vulnerable and marginalised populations.
