In 2025, India took several important steps to modernise and clean up its transport infrastructure. The focus was on electric mobility, alternative fuels, better fuel access, and improved facilities for road users. These efforts were aimed at making transportation more efficient, sustainable, and accessible across the country.
One of the biggest developments in 2025 was the sharp rise in electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. Under the FAME-II scheme, 8,932 charging points were installed at petrol pumps nationwide. Alongside this, oil marketing companies set up over 18,500 additional chargers using their own funds.
This brought the total number of EV charging stations in India to 27,432. Installing chargers at fuel stations made charging more convenient, as these locations are already familiar and easily accessible to drivers. This move is expected to encourage wider use of electric cars and two-wheelers.
India also pushed forward with the development of integrated Energy Stations. These stations are designed as multi-fuel hubs offering petrol, diesel, EV charging, and alternative fuels such as biofuels, CNG and LNG where feasible.
Between 2024–25 and 2028–29, public sector oil companies plan to establish 4,000 Energy Stations along highways and key transport corridors. By November 1, 2025, 1,064 such stations were already operational, supporting both conventional and clean energy needs.
Transport infrastructure growth also focused on freight movement and road safety. Under the APNA GHAR initiative, more than 500 rest areas were created for truck drivers. These facilities help reduce fatigue, improve safety on highways, and create employment opportunities in rural regions located near major roads.
Biofuels saw strong progress during the year. Ethanol blending in petrol reached an average of 19.24% in the 2024–25 supply year. This reduced fuel imports, led to foreign exchange savings of over ₹1.55 lakh crore, and helped cut carbon emissions.
Advanced biofuels were also promoted, with second-generation ethanol plants becoming operational at Panipat and Numaligarh under the Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN Yojana.
Fuel retail infrastructure was upgraded across the country. Over 90,000 retail outlets were enabled with digital payment systems, supported by more than 2.71 lakh POS machines. Doorstep delivery of petrol and diesel expanded through over 3,200 fuel bowsers, improving access in remote areas. Clean toilet facilities were also ensured at nearly all fuel stations.
India’s transport infrastructure expansion in 2025 showed a clear shift towards cleaner energy, better access, and improved convenience. From EV charging and biofuels to digital fuel services and driver facilities, these measures have laid the groundwork for a more sustainable and efficient transport system.
