As per the news reports, the Indian government is preparing to roll out the National Critical Mineral Stockpile (NCMS), a strategic initiative aimed at ensuring the steady supply of rare earth elements critical for electric vehicles, wind turbines, and defence technologies.

The move follows China’s restrictions on the export of rare earth magnets, which have disrupted global supply chains and intensified India’s focus on self-reliance in critical minerals.

Building India’s Mineral Resilience

The initiative complements the government’s efforts under the National Critical Minerals Mission (NCMM), which has allocated ₹500 crore to “guard against supply disruptions and ensure mineral availability for domestic use.”

This comes alongside a ₹7,300 crore incentive scheme approved by an inter-ministerial panel to promote the production of rare earth magnets, targeting 6,000 tonnes of capacity over the next five years. The stockpile will thus act as a buffer against supply volatility while boosting domestic production and reducing import dependence.

Expanding Production and Reducing Reliance

India holds an estimated 7.23 million tonnes of rare earth oxide, contained within 13.15 million tonnes of monazite deposits spread across Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. However, sector experts point out that the country’s limited technological capacity to extract and process rare earths remains a challenge, as most supplies are currently imported.

The Ministry of Mines has so far conducted five tranches of auctions for critical and strategic mineral blocks, putting 55 under the hammer, with 34 successfully awarded. Last month, the government launched the sixth tranche for additional blocks.

Conclusion

The creation of the National Critical Mineral Stockpile marks a pivotal step towards India’s mineral self-sufficiency. By combining domestic production, strategic reserves, and public–private partnerships, the initiative will strengthen India’s critical minerals ecosystem and safeguard its long-term industrial and clean energy ambitions.
