The Central Government has revised the procurement price for onions under its buffer stock programme, increasing the Minimum Assured Procurement Price (MAPP) to ₹16.50 per kg, as per PTI news report.

The revised rate came into effect on June 13, 2026, and applies to procurement undertaken for maintaining buffer stocks under the Price Stabilisation Fund.

Procurement Price Revised To ₹16.50 Per Kg

The revised MAPP has been fixed at ₹1,650 per quintal, up from the earlier ₹1,580 per quintal.

According to Union Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, “Based on prevailing mandi prices and quality requirements for storage-grade onions, the Minimum Assured Procurement Price (MAPP) has been revised to ₹1,650 per quintal with effect from 13 June 2026.”

The minister also said the pricing methodology has been refined to make procurement more responsive to prevailing market conditions.

Buffer Stock Procurement Continues

The government maintains onion buffer stocks under the Price Stabilisation Fund for market intervention purposes.

Procurement for the current season commenced on May 15, while the target for the year has been set at 2 lakh tonnes compared with 3 lakh tonnes procured during 2025-26.

Official estimates place onion production at 307.37 lakh tonnes for 2025-26, compared with 307.67 lakh tonnes in the previous year.

Farmers Seek Higher Procurement Rate

Farmers in Maharashtra have sought a procurement price of ₹30 per kg, citing higher cultivation and input costs.

Earlier, they had expressed concerns that the procurement rate of around ₹1,580 per quintal offered by procurement agencies was insufficient to cover production expenses.
