The Union government has taken another step towards expanding ethanol usage in transportation fuels by notifying quality standards for petrol blended with up to 30% ethanol.
The move comes as India prepares for the next stage of its ethanol blending programme following the achievement of higher blending levels in conventional petrol.
The newly notified specifications are expected to provide the technical framework required for introducing higher ethanol-blended fuels in the future while supporting the government's objectives of reducing crude oil dependence and strengthening the domestic biofuel ecosystem.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has issued specifications covering E22, E25, E27 and E30 fuel variants.
These standards define the technical and quality parameters for petrol blended with varying proportions of anhydrous ethanol for use in spark-ignition engine vehicles.
The notification establishes regulatory and technical benchmarks necessary for future deployment of higher ethanol blends.
However, the move does not immediately mandate the nationwide sale or adoption of E30 fuel and primarily serves as a framework for future implementation.
The development follows India's accelerated ethanol blending roadmap, under which the target for achieving 20% ethanol blending in petrol was advanced from 2030 to FY26.
As policymakers explore the feasibility of increasing ethanol content beyond E20, attention is gradually shifting towards infrastructure readiness across the fuel distribution and automobile sectors.
Industry participants have previously indicated that higher ethanol blends may require dedicated storage facilities, modified dispensing systems, and adjustments to fuel logistics networks.
Vehicle manufacturers are also expanding efforts to develop flex-fuel technologies capable of operating on multiple ethanol concentrations.
Several automobile companies have already introduced or tested vehicles designed to accommodate higher ethanol blends as part of India's transition towards alternative fuel solutions.
The government believes greater ethanol consumption can help lower crude oil imports, create additional demand for agricultural feedstocks, and contribute to emission reduction efforts.
However, industry experts have highlighted the need for coordinated development of fuel infrastructure, vehicle compatibility standards, and supply chains before large-scale adoption of higher blends.

The notification of standards for fuel blends containing up to 30% ethanol marks an important milestone in India's biofuel strategy and lays the groundwork for future expansion of ethanol-based transportation fuels across the country.
