The Finance Ministry has granted a retrospective customs duty exemption on goods imported for nuclear power generation, according to a government order dated June 11.

The exemption covers eligible imports made between April 1, 2019, and January 31, 2026.

Customs Duty Exemption Applied Retrospectively

Under the latest order, customs duties have been waived on all goods imported for nuclear power generation during the specified period.

The move provides retrospective tax relief for imports undertaken over nearly seven years.

Budget Announcement Extended Till 2035

In the Union Budget presented in February, the government extended customs duty exemptions on nuclear power equipment until 2035.

The latest notification applies the exemption retrospectively to eligible imports made before January 31, 2026.

Measure Supports Nuclear Power Sector

The exemption is aimed at supporting investments in nuclear power infrastructure by reducing the cost of imported equipment and components required for power generation projects.

Nuclear energy continues to be a key component of India's long-term energy strategy.

Government Continues Focus on Energy Security

The latest order forms part of broader policy measures aimed at strengthening domestic energy infrastructure and supporting the country's future power requirements.

India has been expanding its focus on multiple energy sources, including nuclear, renewable, and conventional power generation.

Conclusion

With the latest order, eligible imports made for nuclear power generation between April 2019 and January 2026 will qualify for customs duty exemption. The move follows the government's decision earlier this year to extend the exemption framework for nuclear power equipment until 2035.
