As per Reuters news report, India has implemented restrictions on the sale of high-speed diesel and motor spirit, affecting institutional and commercial buyers.

These buyers are now required to procure fuel directly from their consumer pumps.

New Fuel Sale Restrictions in India

A notification issued on June 12, 2026, states that the restrictions will last for an initial period of up to 90 days.

Retail outlets are instructed not to sell more than 200 litres of high-speed diesel to a single customer or vehicle in one day, and the purchased fuel cannot be resold.

The government’s decision comes as a measure to control the sale of high-speed diesel and motor spirit.

Institutional and commercial buyers have been directed to rely on their consumer pumps to meet their fuel needs.

Sales Limitations Imposed

Retail dealers are restricted from selling excess high-speed diesel or motor spirit beyond the 200-litre daily cap per customer or vehicle.

The regulation is specifically targeted at preventing these buyers from purchasing large volumes at retail outlets for further resale purposes.

Scope of the Restriction

The restriction primarily targets institutional and commercial customers who frequently purchase large quantities for business operations.

By directing these buyers to their consumer pumps, the government aims to manage the distribution of high-speed diesel and motor spirit effectively.

The limitations are set to remain in effect for 90 days unless voided by subsequent orders. This regulatory action reflects the country’s approach to overseeing the distribution of essential commodities.

Implementation Measures

The authorities tasked with overseeing the implementation have made it mandatory for retail outlets to comply with these restrictions.

The notification highlighted the importance of ensuring that the high-speed diesel sold at retail outlets is not diverted for resale.

Conclusion

India's measures to restrict the sale of high-speed diesel and motor spirit involve a daily cap of 200 litres per customer. Institutional and commercial buyers must now source their needs through consumer pumps, ensuring a controlled distribution system for a 90-day period.
