Government Expands Fuel Dispenser Verification Rules, To Cover CNG, LNG and Hydrogen Pumps Amid Clean Energy Push

As per ANI news reports, the Central government has widened the scope of fuel measurement verification rules by bringing cleaner fuel dispensing systems under the Government-Approved Test Centre (GATC) framework, as India continues expanding its cleaner energy infrastructure, through amendments introduced by the Department of Consumer Affairs on May 24, 2026, to the Legal Metrology (Government-Approved Test Centre) Rules, 2013.
Cleaner Fuel Dispensers Added Under Verification System
Under the revised framework, Government-Approved Test Centres will now be authorised to verify dispensers used for petrol, diesel, CNG, LPG, LNG, and hydrogen fuels.
Earlier, GATCs handled verification across 18 categories of weights and measuring instruments. With the addition of five new fuel dispensing categories, the total coverage has now increased to 23 categories.
The government said the move is intended to improve fuel measurement accuracy, increase transparency in fuel transactions, and strengthen consumer protection standards.
“The move is expected to enhance the availability of verification services, improve efficiency and support the growing adoption of cleaner fuels across the country,” the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution said.
Verification Fees Standardised Under New Rules
The government has also fixed verification charges under the amended rules.
Verification fees for petrol and diesel dispensers have been set at ₹5,000 per nozzle, while dispensers for CNG, LPG, LNG and hydrogen will attract verification fees of ₹10,000 per nozzle.
The structure is aimed at encouraging greater participation from private laboratories and industrial entities with technical expertise to operate as Government-Approved Test Centres under the Legal Metrology Act.
States Get More Flexibility Under Revised Framework
The amendments additionally allow state governments to notify more categories of weights and measures for verification through GATCs based on local operational requirements.
To speed up approvals and administrative processes, officers of Joint Secretary rank and above have also been authorised to exercise powers under relevant provisions of the rules.
The government said the expanded framework would help State Legal Metrology Departments focus more on inspection, enforcement activities and consumer grievance handling.
“The measure will help ensure accurate fuel delivery and greater transparency in transactions,” the department added.
