Minister of State for Telecom Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani has asked four Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) circles, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal, to improve service quality and address operational issues. The instructions were issued during a review meeting held on Friday with all circle and business unit heads.
The minister directed the circles to resolve tower power supply problems, ensure timely repair of fibre cuts, and adopt locally suited sales and marketing approaches. This is to strengthen BSNL’s presence in these regions and improve customer experience through better network reliability.
In late July, Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia had asked BSNL to expand its mobile service business by 50% within a year. He also set targets for increasing enterprise business by 25-30% and fixed-line services by 15-20% for each circle and business unit.
BSNL has posted net profits for 2 consecutive quarters after a gap of 18 years. The company recorded a profit of ₹280 crore in the March quarter of FY25, compared to a loss of ₹849 crore in the same period a year earlier. In the October–December quarter of FY25, it reported a profit after tax of ₹262 crore.
As per the news reports, the central government has infused more than ₹3 lakh crore into BSNL over the last six years to revive its operations. These funds have been used for network expansion, technology upgrades, and operational improvements.
Despite recent profits, BSNL’s customer base has been declining, mainly due to service quality concerns. Frequent outages and maintenance delays have been cited as factors impacting subscriber numbers.
