Germany, France, Italy Tighten Schengen Visa Rules for Indians; Rejections Surged in 2024

Indian travellers are facing major hurdles in getting Schengen visas in 2025. Countries like Germany, France, Italy, and Switzerland have significantly increased visa rejections for Indian applicants.
Over ₹136 Crore Lost in Fees and Bookings
In 2024, over 1.65 lakh Indian visa applications were rejected. This led to a loss of more than ₹136 crore due to non-refundable application fees, hotel bookings, air tickets, and travel insurance.
- France rejected 31,314 applications, causing a ₹25.8 crore loss.
- Switzerland followed with 26,126 rejections.
- Germany and Italy denied over 15,000 each.
- The Netherlands also contributed with 14,569 rejections.
Germany Ends Informal Appeal Option
Germany has recently discontinued its fast-track visa appeal process, known as "remonstration." Now, rejected applicants must go through full legal procedures, making it more difficult and expensive.
Long Delays at Consulates
Visa appointments in some countries are taking up to 2 months, especially during peak travel seasons. Germany and France are the most affected by delays and backlogs.
Students and Professionals Also Affected
It's not just tourists who are being impacted; students, working professionals, and small business owners are also finding it hard to secure visas. Germany, once a popular choice for Indian students, is now tougher to access.

Conclusion
The rising number of Schengen visa rejections is hitting Indian travellers hard, financially and emotionally. Without urgent reforms or improved systems, the India-EU travel relationship may face long-term setbacks.
