India's food safety regulator, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), has initiated action against several alcoholic beverage manufacturers for alleged non-compliance with labelling and product standards. The notices relate to the use of flavouring agents that replicate natural taste profiles and the display of age-related claims that may not meet regulatory requirements.

The move highlights the regulator's increased focus on ensuring that alcoholic beverages sold in the country comply with the Food Safety and Standards (Alcoholic Beverages) Regulations, 2018, and provide accurate information to consumers.

FSSAI Seeks Explanation From Manufacturers

FSSAI said it has issued notices to Food Business Operators (FBOs) manufacturing alcoholic beverages under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The companies have been asked to explain the alleged violations and clarify why enforcement action should not be taken against them.

The regulator has also instructed the manufacturers to bring their products and labels in line with the applicable regulatory framework.

Use of Flavouring Agents Comes Under Scanner

During its review, FSSAI found instances where manufacturers allegedly used flavouring substances to recreate the characteristic taste and aroma of products such as rum, brandy, gin, malt or grain whisky, wine and beer.

According to the regulator, these beverage categories are expected to derive their flavour and aroma naturally. Using added ingredients to imitate these characteristics does not align with the provisions of the 2018 regulations.

Regulator Questions Age-Related Claims

Apart from flavouring practices, FSSAI has also raised objections to the way certain alcoholic beverages are marketed using terms that indicate ageing.

The regulator stated that whenever expressions such as "aged" or similar descriptions are used, the declared age must represent the youngest spirit present in the blend. It found that some products carrying such claims did not appear to meet this requirement, making the labels potentially misleading for consumers.

Conclusion

The latest notices reflect FSSAI's efforts to tighten oversight of India's alcoholic beverages industry and improve transparency in product labelling. Manufacturers are now required to respond to the regulator's observations and ensure compliance with the prescribed standards, or they may face further action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
