FedEx has begun construction of a fully automated air cargo hub at Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), marking a major long-term investment of over ₹2,500 crore. The new facility is expected to strengthen Western India’s position as a key gateway for global trade and improve air cargo capacity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The 3,00,000 sq ft hub is being developed in partnership with Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL). Once completed, it will work as a regional consolidation and redistribution centre, linking India with major markets in Southeast Asia, West Asia, Europe, and the United States.
The new FedEx facility will include advanced automated sorting systems, high-speed security screening, and dedicated aircraft parking bays. With automation at its core, the hub is designed to improve cargo handling speed, reduce delays, and support time-sensitive shipments.
The facility is expected to handle high-value cargo such as electronics, engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, and perishable items. These categories often require quick movement, reliable logistics, and efficient storage and screening systems.
Sources indicate that the facility is likely to become fully operational after more than a year. Once functional, it will support both domestic cargo movement and international export flows, helping reduce pressure on existing cargo infrastructure in the region.
The project is expected to generate more than 6,000 direct and indirect jobs. These roles are likely to span logistics operations, warehousing, transportation, ground handling, and other allied services.
This development could also boost local supply chains, improve export readiness for manufacturers, and support businesses that rely on dependable cargo movement.
Navi Mumbai International Airport is strategically located near Jawaharlal Nehru Port, industrial corridors, and multimodal transport networks. This connectivity makes it a strong candidate for becoming a major air freight gateway in India.
NMIA’s cargo infrastructure is planned to begin with an initial capacity of around 0.5 million metric tonnes per year. Over time, this is expected to scale up to about 3.25 million metric tonnes in phases, significantly expanding Mumbai’s long-term cargo handling potential.

FedEx’s decision to build a fully automated cargo hub at NMIA signals rising confidence in India’s logistics and export growth story. With large-scale automation, improved cargo capacity, and stronger global connectivity, the new hub could play an important role in positioning Maharashtra as a leading trade and logistics centre for the country.
