The European Union and India are set to outline a draft security and defence partnership aimed at strengthening strategic engagement. The framework proposes regular consultations on defence-related matters and explores potential areas of joint activity.
The initiative comes as Europe looks to broaden its international partnerships amid shifting global security and economic conditions.
A draft document reviewed by Reuters indicates that the European Union and India intend to formalise a new partnership covering security and defence cooperation. The arrangement is expected to be endorsed at a scheduled meeting between representatives of both sides.
The draft highlights plans for consultations on respective defence initiatives, including discussions linked to defence industry-related matters.
The proposal outlines that both parties will assess opportunities for India to participate in selected European defence initiatives where shared interests and aligned security objectives exist. Any engagement would proceed in accordance with the legal frameworks governing each side.
This approach seeks to create space for cooperation while respecting existing policy structures.
The partnership framework includes plans to introduce an annual EU–India dialogue on security and defence. It also proposes enhanced cooperation in maritime security, cyber security and counterterrorism.
The document notes that evolving security challenges, geopolitical shifts and technological developments have increased the need for closer coordination between the EU and India.
Alongside defence discussions, India and the European Union are also expected to announce progress in negotiations on a free trade agreement. This reflects broader efforts to strengthen economic engagement in parallel with strategic cooperation.
