India has taken a historic step by opening the nuclear energy sector to private companies, ending a 60-year government monopoly. This move is expected to accelerate innovation, strengthen energy security, and position India as a global leader in advanced nuclear technologies.

The announcement came during the inauguration of Skyroot Aerospace’s Infinity Campus in Hyderabad and the unveiling of India’s first privately built satellite-launch vehicle, Vikram-I, highlighting the government’s push for private sector participation in high-tech industries.

Atomic Energy Bill, 2025

This reform coincides with the Atomic Energy Bill, 2025, to be tabled in the Winter Session of Parliament. The Bill will regulate nuclear energy use while allowing private-sector participation. It also aligns with earlier plans to amend the Atomic Energy Act, 1962 and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage (CLND) Act, 2010, clearing the way for private investment.

Why Does It Matter?

This landmark decision:

  • Ends six decades of government monopoly in nuclear power
  • Encourages private investment in advanced clean energy systems
  • Boosts innovation in SMRs, advanced reactors, and nuclear technologies
  • Strengthens energy security and supports industrial growth
  • Positions India as a global leader in nuclear and high-tech energy solutions

How Will Private Companies Help India’s Nuclear Energy Sector?

The government plans to develop Bharat Small Reactors, modular reactors, and other advanced nuclear systems. SMRs are globally recognised for their scalability, flexibility, and ability to provide stable, round-the-clock power, making them key to India’s industrial growth and energy security.

Private investment is expected to speed up deployment and technological development, helping India maintain a competitive edge in clean energy and nuclear innovation.

What Was the Atomic Energy Act of 1962?

For decades, the Atomic Energy Act of 1962 restricted private investment in nuclear power, keeping operations under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). Now, private companies will be able to invest in small modular reactors (SMRs), advanced reactors, and other nuclear innovations, a move seen as crucial for India’s long-term clean energy strategy.

The reform is expected to bring the same growth seen in India’s space sector, where private participation spurred innovation, faster development, and global recognition.

Conclusion

Opening the nuclear sector to private players is a historic reform that could reshape India’s energy future. By attracting private investment and promoting advanced technologies, India is moving towards a more secure, sustainable, and innovative energy ecosystem.
