Delhi is set to welcome Bharat Taxi, India’s first cooperative-based taxi service, as a new alternative to existing app-based cab aggregators, as per news reports.
Launched by the Centre, the service aims to offer fair pricing, stronger driver welfare and reliable urban mobility.
Operated by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited, Bharat Taxi follows a zero-commission model and is available on both Android and iOS platforms. The app allows users to register via mobile number, enter pick-up and drop locations, choose from cars, auto-rickshaws or bike taxis, and track rides in real time.
Key features include a transparent fare structure, multilingual interface, user-friendly booking, and 24×7 customer support. Safety is strengthened through verified driver onboarding, integration with Delhi Police and other agencies, and ride-sharing options for added security.
The platform also seeks to curb unchecked surge pricing and address common issues such as ride refusals and cancellations.
Bharat Taxi is built on a driver-owned cooperative structure, designed to provide higher earnings and better working conditions. Drivers are set to receive up to 80% of the fare directly through a structured monthly credit system, offering an equitable alternative to private aggregators.
According to government sources, over 56,000 drivers have registered so far, with trials completed in Delhi and a pilot underway in Rajkot, Gujarat. Following its January rollout in the capital, the service is expected to expand gradually to more than 20 cities across India.

With a cooperative structure, safety integrations and plans for nationwide expansion, the platform aims to create a more equitable and sustainable urban mobility ecosystem for both passengers and drivers.
