The grand celebration of Chhath Puja 2025 has driven a massive business boom across India. According to data from the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), the festival has generated a nationwide trade of nearly ₹50,000 crore, highlighting its growing role in India’s cultural and economic landscape.
The state of Bihar, considered the cultural heart of Chhath Puja, recorded business activities worth ₹15,000 crore. The festival’s preparations and celebrations created high demand for food items, religious materials, and transportation services.
Following Bihar, the Delhi-NCR region reported about ₹8,000 crore in trade, while Jharkhand saw an estimated ₹5,000 crore worth of business. Other states, including Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan, also experienced strong sales and economic activity driven by the festival.
More than 10 crore people across the country participated in Chhath celebrations this year. While Bihar, Jharkhand, and eastern Uttar Pradesh remained the traditional centres of the festival, the Purvanchal community in Delhi and NCR also played a major role in expanding its reach. The celebrations have now become a pan-India phenomenon, supported by millions of devotees and traders alike.
The festival has showcased how traditional celebrations can stimulate large-scale economic activity. Demand surged for bananas, sugarcane, coconuts, grains, rice, sweets such as thekua and laddoos, and various puja essentials like baskets, diyas, flowers, and clay utensils.
Additionally, services such as ghat cleaning, lighting, decoration, boat rides, and sanitation saw a rise in demand, supporting local workers and small traders. Many businesses, especially those in rural and semi-urban areas, witnessed record sales during the festival week.
The CAIT noted that India’s GST reforms helped boost efficiency and pricing across sectors, benefiting both traders and consumers during the Chhath season. Simplified tax structures allowed small sellers to manage large festive demand effectively.
