The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $230 million loan for the modernisation of Chennai's water supply and sanitation infrastructure, as per an announcement by ADB.

The funding is to support works across the Greater Chennai area, where around 4.5 million people are expected to benefit from improvements to water distribution and sewerage services.

Expansion of Water and Sewerage Network

The project includes the construction of more than 170 km of water supply and sewer pipelines. Seven water pumping stations and 38 sewer pumping stations will also be upgraded.

According to ADB, the works are for improving the capacity of the existing network and strengthening the operation of water and wastewater services. Chennai will also introduce a ring-main water distribution system under the project.

ADB noted that the city will be the first in India to adopt the closed-loop network, which is to maintain balanced water pressure and improve the movement of water across different service areas.

Utility Systems to Be Upgraded

Alongside the physical works, the project includes changes to utility operations. Digital monitoring systems will be introduced to provide real-time information on the performance of water supply and sewerage networks.

The programme also provides for the use of mechanised equipment for sewer inspections in place of manual entry. It includes systems for quicker detection of blockages and will prepare water distribution infrastructure in at least two Greater Chennai zones for future expansion.

Response to Growing Urban Demand

Chennai is India's fourth-largest city and a key industrial centre. However, its water supply and sanitation infrastructure has not expanded at the same pace as the city's population and urban growth.

ADB said the latest financing builds on earlier projects undertaken in Chennai and is aligned with the Government of India's Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 and the Urban Challenge Fund.

ADB Country Director for India Mio Oka said the project is expected to improve access to water and sanitation services while supporting climate resilience, public health and the long-term management of the city's water network.
