According to a TOI report, Indian Railways is moving toward enhanced travel efficiency by introducing new baggage regulations akin to airline protocols. Implementing this initiative at key stations aims to improve the travel experience and manage onboard space more effectively.
As per the reports, passengers at major railway stations such as Prayagraj Junction, Kanpur Central, and Tundla will now see airline-style baggage weight checks. Luggage exceeding the permissible weight will incur extra charges. These new measures use electronic weighing machines and aim to reinforce discipline and comfort during long-distance travel.
The luggage limits vary depending on the travel class. Passengers in AC First Class can carry up to 70 kg, AC Two-Tier passengers up to 50 kg, while AC Three-Tier and Sleeper Class travellers are allowed 40 kg. General Class passengers can bring up to 35 kg. Oversized items blocking onboard space will attract penalties, even if they fall within weight limits.
In the initial phase, the policy will be enforced in the NCR zone at railway stations, including Prayagraj Junction, Mirzapur, Aligarh Junction, and Etawah. These stations are now equipped with electronic luggage check systems to facilitate efficient implementation and avoid service delays.

Prayagraj Junction is undergoing a ₹960 crore redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The plan includes a 9-storey complex equipped with facilities like modern waiting lounges, solar panels, auto-ticket machines, digital displays, rainwater harvesting, and high-speed Wi-Fi, giving the station an airport-like appeal.
The redevelopment also introduces premium single-brand stores selling apparel, electronics, and travel gear. This modern infrastructure is expected to boost passenger convenience and contribute to increased railway revenue, positioning these stations as modern transport hubs.
Indian Railways’ move to enforce strict baggage rules reflects its vision to deliver a comfortable and efficient journey reminiscent of air travel. By regulating luggage at select NCR stations and redeveloping infrastructure, the Indian Railways is moving toward a more organised and modern travel ecosystem.
