The DRP has officially released its first eligibility list for residents as part of the initial phase of the slum redevelopment project. Focused on Sector 6, which includes Meghwadi and Ganesh Nagar in Mahim, the list identifies 505 tenements, out of which over 75% have been deemed eligible for housing rehabilitation.
This release marks a significant milestone in the long-awaited revamp of Dharavi, often called Asia’s largest slum.
Who Is Eligible and What Will They Get?
Eligibility is determined by the cut-off date of settlement:
- Residents settled before January 1, 2000 are eligible for 350 sq ft homes within Dharavi itself.
- Those who moved in between January 1, 2000 and January 1, 2011 may receive 300 sq ft homes at alternative locations outside Dharavi.
- A separate proposal is under consideration to accommodate ineligible commercial units on rent, ensuring they can still continue operating inside Dharavi.
Breakdown of the First List
Here’s how the numbers look for the 505 tenements surveyed:
- 229 tenements have already been approved as eligible under various criteria.
- 70 households are in the process of submitting additional documents to prove their eligibility.
- 31 tenements have not submitted any documentation so far.
- 137 cases are pending BMC verification, and efforts are ongoing to complete this.
- 38 structures are listed as amenity spaces and not eligible under residential criteria.
Commercial Units and Special Considerations
Eligible commercial establishments will be granted free in-situ commercial space within Dharavi. Interestingly, the DRP is also proposing to allow currently ineligible commercial units to operate on a rental basis within the redeveloped area potentially offering continuity for small businesses that form the economic fabric of Dharavi.
Public Feedback Invited
Residents named in the Draft Annexure-II list are encouraged to review their status and submit any suggestions or objections to the DRP office. The last date to submit feedback is July 5.
Conclusion
The release of the first eligibility list under the Dharavi Redevelopment Project marks a crucial step forward, offering clarity to hundreds of residents and business owners. While a majority have been found eligible, others are still navigating documentation and verification processes.
The project’s inclusive intent offering housing within and outside Dharavi reflects its large-scale ambitions. As the process unfolds, continued transparency and resident engagement will be watched.
