The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued a cautionary statement to senior citizens regarding a fake message claiming a 30% flat discount on property tax for seniors.

Officials have advised not to believe such messages circulating on social media.

Origin of the Fake Message

The false message, which suggests that the state government sanctioned a 30% discount on property tax for senior citizens, led to a wave of inquiries at the PMC offices.

This surge has prompted PMC to firmly state that no such rebate exists. Head of PMC's property tax department, Ravi Pawar, emphasised that no special discounts are currently on offer for any demographic group.

Official PMC Statement and Advisory

PMC officials clarified that they have thoroughly verified and found the message to be untrue. Citizens are encouraged to rely exclusively on information from their local ward offices or the official PMC website for any tax-related inquiries or announcements.

The PMC reassured that legitimate discounts are currently offered only for tax payments made before May 31, to incentivise early payments. Additionally, concessions are available for complying with green building norms like rainwater harvesting.

Importance of Verifying Information

This incident underscores the necessity of verifying any such messages or announcements through trustworthy channels. Fake news can spread confusion and lead to unnecessary administrative burdens.

The PMC continues to urge citizens to stay informed through official communications to avoid being misled by fraudulent claims.

Conclusion

The PMC's swift disclaimer highlights the importance of maintaining vigilance against misinformation. Citizens are advised to adhere to official sources for reliable updates, and not be swayed by deceptive communications. Taxpayers should always authenticate information regarding rebates or concessions directly from municipal authorities.
