The Income Tax Department has identified several instances of incorrect tax relief claims and bogus deduction claims during the last 5 years through technology-driven scrutiny and verification exercises, the Finance Ministry told Parliament.
The findings have led to follow-up investigations, tax recovery proceedings and enforcement action under the Income-tax Act, 1961. The government also highlighted the growing contribution of the CBDT's NUDGE (Non-intrusive Usage of Data to Guide and Enable) initiative in improving voluntary tax compliance.
In a written reply in the Lok Sabha on August 3, 2026, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said the CBDT uses an internal analytics platform to detect possible tax evasion.
The system combines information from a wide range of sources, including income tax returns, SFT filings, TDS and TCS statements, GST records, banking transactions and property registration databases. The department applies continuously updated risk parameters to identify unusual financial behaviour, excessive deduction claims and mismatches in reported income.
Cases flagged through analytics are subjected to e-verification and, where necessary, surveys, searches and assessments. The government said these exercises have yielded evidence relating to tax evasion and other violations of tax laws.
The Finance Ministry said the CBDT's NUDGE campaign aims to improve compliance through preventive communication rather than intrusive enforcement. Taxpayers identified through risk analysis receive alerts asking them to review and, if required, update previously filed returns.
The campaign focuses on cases involving undisclosed income or assets, inaccurate reporting and excessive deduction or exemption claims. Outreach programmes conducted with employers have also been used to encourage taxpayers to file revised, belated or updated returns voluntarily.
According to the government, these efforts resulted in about 1.25 crore revised or updated ITRs, generating ₹9,493 crore in additional tax collections.
The Income Tax Department has also identified certain tax return preparers, chartered accountants and other intermediaries allegedly involved in facilitating fraudulent claims. Enforcement measures include reassessments, penalties, prosecution, surveys and search-and-seizure operations.
Information relating to such professionals has been shared with regulatory authorities, including the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). The CBDT is also continuing information-sharing arrangements with agencies such as the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) to strengthen tax administration and curb evasion.
The government’s use of data analytics and the CBDT’s NUDGE initiative signals a sharper, technology-led approach to tax compliance. By detecting mismatches early, encouraging voluntary corrections and acting against fraudulent intermediaries, the Income Tax Department is strengthening transparency and accountability. Taxpayers must ensure accurate reporting to avoid scrutiny, penalties and future enforcement action.
