The Income Tax Department has introduced a new online facility on its e-Filing portal that allows taxpayers to correct certain errors in income tax challans. The move is aimed at reducing tax credit mismatches, speeding up refund processing, and eliminating the need for taxpayers to approach assessing officers for routine corrections.
Whenever income tax is paid online, a challan is generated containing key details such as assessment year, tax category, and payment type. Errors in these fields often lead to mismatches in tax records, causing delays during Income Tax Return (ITR) filing and refund processing.
A challan correction request allows taxpayers to rectify mistakes made while paying taxes online. Under the new system, eligible taxpayers can directly update specific details through the Income Tax e-Filing portal.
The facility is available only for “unconsumed” challans—those that have not yet been used in tax processing. Importantly, each challan can be corrected only once online, after which further changes require intervention by the Jurisdictional Assessing Officer.
The service currently applies to challans from Assessment Year 2020–21 onwards.
Taxpayers can modify three key fields:
However, time limits apply to different corrections:
Corrections related to Assessment Year and Tax Year must be made within 7 days of challan generation or deposit. Meanwhile, changes in Major and Minor Heads are allowed within 30 days, subject to certain restrictions.
For example, Minor Head corrections are currently limited to advance tax, self-assessment tax, and demand payment categories. Other cases require approval from the assessing officer.
The facility does not apply to ITNS 281 challans used for TDS and TCS payments. These corrections must be carried out through the TRACES portal instead.
To make corrections, taxpayers need to log in to the e-Filing portal, select the challan correction service, search using CIN or assessment details, make required changes, and complete e-verification through Aadhaar OTP, EVC, or DSC. Status updates are typically available within 7 to 20 days.

The new challan correction system marks a significant step towards simplifying tax compliance in India. By enabling faster corrections and reducing dependency on assessing officers, the facility is expected to improve accuracy in tax credit reflection, reduce refund delays, and streamline the overall ITR filing experience for taxpayers in AY 2026–27.
