Tata Steel Limited has provided an update on its ongoing legal matters concerning the Sukinda Chromite Block. The company has been granted an extension of interim protection by the Hon’ble High Court of Orissa, with the next hearing scheduled for January 29, 2026.
The legal issues stem from two writ petitions filed by Tata Steel. The first, Writ Petition (Civil) No. 22431 of 2025, was initiated following a demand letter issued on July 3, 2025, by the Office of Deputy Director of Mines, Jajpur.
This letter demanded ₹1,902,72,53,760 in connection with a revised assessment of mineral dispatch shortfall from the Sukinda Chromite Block for the 4th year of the Mine Development and Production Agreement, covering July 23, 2023, to July 22, 2024.
On October 3, 2025, a second demand letter was issued, leading to Writ Petition (Civil) No. 31035 of 2025. This letter demanded ₹2,410,89,66,881 for the 5th year, covering July 23, 2024, to July 22, 2025, alleging violations of Rule 12A of the Minerals (Other than Atomic and Hydro Carbons Energy Minerals) Concession Rules, 2016.
Both writ petitions sought to quash the respective demand letters. The Hon’ble High Court initially granted interim protection, preventing coercive action against Tata Steel.
This protection was extended multiple times, most recently until January 19, 2026. On January 21, 2026, the court further extended this protection until January 29, 2026.
