India Power Corporation Limited has entered into a partnership with Bhutan’s Green Energy Power Private Limited to develop a 70 megawatt solar power facility in the Paro region of Bhutan, as per PTI report.
The project forms part of IPCL’s strategy to build a total of 1.5 gigawatts of solar generation capacity in Bhutan over the next 5 years.
The proposed solar plant will be located at Tenchuka in Paro, a site identified after an initial evaluation of terrain suitability, sunlight availability and evacuation feasibility.
Spread across roughly 200 acres, the south-facing land benefits from strong solar exposure. The site is situated close to the Jamjee 220/33 kV substation, around 3.5 kilometres away, which is expected to facilitate seamless grid connectivity.
Bhutan’s electricity requirements are projected to rise sharply in the near term, supported by large urban development initiatives such as the Gelephu Mindful City, growth in power-intensive manufacturing sectors including ferrosilicon, and increasing demand from digital infrastructure and crypto-related activities.
Although hydropower remains the backbone of the country’s energy supply, Bhutan has outlined a target of reaching 25,000 MW of installed capacity by 2034. Of this, 5,000 MW is planned to come from solar sources to diversify the generation mix.
Commenting on the development, Somesh Dasgupta, whole-time director of India Power Corporation Limited, said, "The Tenchuka project is not just a capacity addition; it reflects our commitment to cross-border energy cooperation and our goal of becoming a 1.5 GW solar player by 2030."
Tandi Dorji, founder of Green Energy Power Private Limited, said the project would be the first independent power producer (IPP) project in Bhutan.
Several Indian power companies have been stepping up their presence in Bhutan. Tata Power is jointly developing large clean energy projects with Druk Green Power Corporation, while Adani Power has signed an understanding to explore major hydropower opportunities.
Reliance Power is also investing in solar generation in partnership with Druk Holding and Investments, with plans to add further hydro capacity.
As of January 30, 2026, Indian Power Corporation share price is trading at ₹8.70 per share, reflecting a decline of 0.57% from the previous closing price.
The Paro solar project strengthens India Power Corporation’s renewable portfolio in the region and highlights Bhutan’s increasing focus on solar energy alongside hydropower.
